Learning to work with the Void
“Raise your words, not voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.” ― Rumi
Your future is unwritten. You are the pen and your thoughts are the ink with which you write the story of your life. You are the one who literally holds your future in your hands. Your word becomes the road that you create, and then the one which you will follow. Without consciousness as the energy imbuing your word, the future feels haphazard, random and scattershot. Lucky or unlucky, as if it is happening to you instead of through you.
You co-create your experience with a never-ending, readily available, malleable resource that is the Infinite Possibility called the Void.
The Void is not some spooky otherworldly environment meant to ensnare you in eternal emptiness, unless that is what you yourself bring to It. That thought form is a fallacy – a remnant of antiquated views of the universe as being suffused with malevolent, intelligent darkness out to get you when you least expect it.
Of course, from our elevated perspective of today – with advancements of all types, from human rights, to education, to advances in diet and clean water, it is understandable why previous generations from the centuries of yore would hold such fearful perspectives. Life was unbelievably hungry, cold, hard and short. Most folks were uneducated and lived in the dark. Wisdom was in short supply when you only lived to be 45. Perspective comes with the ability to look within and back at previous decades of life, to be able to witness the patterns as they have unfurled.
This hindsight can be 20/20, or it can be murky by a lens fogged with nostalgia for an antiquated, imaginary past called the “good old days”, which truly were not all that great at the time. (One-way ticket to the Middle Ages…..anyone?)
The Void is a form of intelligence, yet not one of judgement. In this way, it is agnostic – not knowing or choosing. It may help for you to conceive of the Void like an infinite PlayDoh that is vibrated into coherence by the field of the consciousness that entrains it. The glove exists, but your hand is the vivifying force. We entrain the Void to our bidding, not the other way around.
So, as you look to the future that you desire to unfold, bring this to your meditations on the dark. Learn to see into the shadows that you yourself have cast, so that you can illuminate where you are going. You have been causing your own blind spots by clinging to guilt, resentment, jealousy and fears. And please, by all means eradicate anxiety! This habit, for it is a pernicious one, creates turbulence in your future moments as much as it does your current one. These turbulent sensations are all learned behaviors, which means they can all, each and every one of them, be unlearned. It does take consistent choosing over time, dedication to new habits, and thoughtful, nurturing community by your side.
By our word and thought, we create decisions and action. Drop by drop like water upon a stone, we carve the way forward – forgetting that we were the one who paved the way.
