“Travel brings power and love back into your life.” ― Rumi
The power of the voyage is not only in the arrival, the packing to leave, or the destination in and of itself. It is for me, the anticipation of the discovery, the longing for the sensations of the new, the novel, the rich and the fantastic. Travel elicits a kind of fever in those who feel its call and a melancholy for when it has is passed.
To travel is to dream and to awaken in a new reality – far from the safety of one’s own home, immersed in the comfort of another.
To travel is to witness, explore, find solace and peace, rejuvenation and restoration. To travel is to come home wholly new, yet wondering if the voyage itself were but a dream?
This is why I go. This is what calls to me and beckons me forward. This feeling that has so many names that it must be nameless. It is not wandering, or moving with no thought, nor is is so destination-driven as to the exclusion of surprise. It is like entering a state of awareness that is ever-present, yet lurking beneath the patina of daily life. Waiting like still water in the bottom of a cave. Slipping into this silky stream allows new senses to ripen and flourish.
The taste of warm peaches in the shimmering air of a Tuscan summer, kilos of tart cherries with cool beer in the sunset over Athens. The scent of briny air splashing the bow of a fishing boat in Indonesia. Witnessing full moon rise as the setting sun melts beneath the edge of the Indian Ocean. Hearing the entire jungle come alive as night creeps into the Amazon. The feeling of waking up in a strange city, sounds of new language, scents of diverse flavors and the tingle of anticipation of what each new day may reveal.
“Not all those who wander are lost.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien
Indeed, to wander is to often become found, whole and renewed. To linger over coffee on a rainy afternoon in Paris, to slip and slide through icy winters in cosmopolitan cities, to drink hot mint tea in the brilliant heat of Morocco. These sensations never leave me, but remain like paint smudged into my jeans.
This is, for me, the essence of being alive. To grow, explore and to know myself anew each time I step off of the tarmac and into a new life. One that has been waiting all along for me to remember it for the very first time.
