The rise of the cultural and intellectually dynamic era (roughly 1400-1700) that became known as The Renaissance – or literally “The Rebirth”, emerged in Florence as an antidote to the morbid, fear-stricken times of the Middle Ages.
The Black Plague had swept through Europe, the Spanish Inquisition was sowing fear and political seeds throughout the lands, and the rise and patronage of the Medici family was the gilded godsend that a newly prosperous population hungered for.
New influences were sweeping the kingdoms, and classic Roman & Greek philosophy were once again brought forward. Discussion rather than dogma began to fill the minds and hearts of those seeking Heaven here on Earth, not one that awaited in prophesied hellfire at the threshold of death.
The rise of the Renaissance was a natural return of the pendulum – swinging back from the constraints of fear and limitation, to one of opening to art, beauty, discourse and societal renewal.
Today, might not such a modern Renaissance bring forth renewed investigation into the humanities & culture, education & science that truly drives forward a prosperous society?
Rather than teetering on the precipice of Despair, lasting remedy always lies in beauty, community and elevation of the heart and mind.
